The Senior doctor of Teplice Spa, Dr. Jan Štěrba, specialist in musculoskeletal diseases with more than 40 years experience, says:

„Over the years, the human body loses water and this loss also reduces the cartilage extracellular matrix. The elasticity of tendons deteriorates and moving of joints and ligaments becomes more painful. People then tend to move less. Less movement reduces the range of joint movements associated with pain. The effect of lytic enzymes causes degeneration of cartilage. Hormonal changes in males and females result in loss of calcium and phosphorus in their bodies. This causes weakening of bones the result of which is osteopenia and in worse case osteoporosis. The spa water contains fluorine, phosphorus, iodine, sulphur and many other components which can make up the loss of necessary minerals and prevent the development of the conditions mentioned above. Very often we are confronted with cases where the disability of many people could have been avoided and this raises our concern that not much attention is paid to the care of the musculoskeletal system. The spa treatment, which adopts a comprehensive, holistic approach, is not only less expensive but also more enjoyable than chronic drug therapy. Some professionals are still not sure whether healthy people should also take a spa treatment.
